William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a teenager aspiring to be a rock-and-roll journalist against the wishes of his eccentric mother (Frances McDormand). He writes for his local underground newspaper about the bands around town including up and coming band Stillwater who are led by guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee). Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres (Terry Chen) reads William's article and calls William wanting him to write a front cover story about Stillwater. William leaves school and his mother and joins the band on tour as a 14 year-old rock writer experiencing the ins and outs, highs and lows, and changes of a rock band on the road. He meets up with Stillwater groupie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) and begins to fall in love with her as he struggles with the band and their constant frustrations of him and his desire to be taken seriously and get the story.
